BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

Focus Conference 2026 call for abstracts poster Focus Conference 2026 call for abstracts details poster

The Learning and Teaching Development Centre (LTDC) at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) invites scholars, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to submit abstracts for presentation at the 12th Focus Conference.

Universities across the globe are navigating profound social, technological, and economic transformation. These shifts are reshaping expectations of higher education institutions and raising fundamental questions about their role in society beyond the traditional functions of teaching and research.

Beyond their traditional functions of teaching and research, universities are increasingly expected to contribute to social progress, economic development, ethical leadership, and the advancement of knowledge that responds directly to contemporary societal challenges.

Within this context, the responsive university has emerged as a critical point of reflection in higher education discourse. Responsiveness speaks to the ability of institutions to remain intellectually independent while engaging meaningfully with societal needs through curricula, research agendas, and institutional practices that promote inclusive development, innovation, and responsible citizenship.

In South Africa, these debates are shaped by ongoing questions of transformation, access, student success, graduate employability, and persistent inequality. At the same time, developments in digital learning and Artificial Intelligence are creating new opportunities as well as ethical, pedagogical, and governance challenges that universities must navigate carefully.

Against this backdrop, the Focus Conference provides a platform for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to reflect on the evolving mission of universities and to explore how higher education institutions can strengthen their responsiveness in ways that advance both global relevance and human development.
